I will be putting the spoilers under the cut but just wanted to do a general review of the movie.
What Maisie Knew has its flaws (mostly because it ran long in the middle) but overall it’s a very emotional, and at times heartbreaking, movie. The entire movie is told from Maisie’s POV which means we don’t get any scenes with any of the other characters by themselves unless Maisie is there. While this directing choice has its limitations, it’s also a great move because from the very beginning it forces us to connect with Maisie. That being said, connecting with Maisie isn’t at all difficult because of Onata Aprile. This movie belongs to her completely. She’s amazing and a real revelation with her old soulful eyes and truly remarkable expressions throughout the whole movie.
But the best part came at the end when I realised Alex was sitting one balcony down and we could see him cheering, whistling and clapping for Onata when her name rolled in the credits. She was sitting next to him and it was SO CUTE how enthusiastic he was about her. He gave her a little pat in the head and everything, it was awesome.
On to the movie:
